{"id":1598,"date":"2025-05-14T16:30:58","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T14:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joellepayom.com\/en\/?p=1598"},"modified":"2026-02-10T19:34:10","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T18:34:10","slug":"inclusion-in-the-workplace-put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joellepayom.com\/en\/2025\/05\/14\/inclusion-in-the-workplace-put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is\/","title":{"rendered":"Inclusion in the workplace: Put your money where your mouth is."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Today, I\u2019d like to invite you to reflect on the notion of authenticity and the alignment between our words and our actions.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, I had the opportunity to publish a column in <em>Le Temps<\/em>, with a deliberately provocative title: <em>Inclusion in the Workplace: Genuine Commitment or Opportunism?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It takes the form of an open letter, written in response to an opinion piece published in January and co-signed by 61 CEOs from French-speaking Switzerland, in which they loudly proclaimed their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.Faced with such a strong public stance, it felt only natural to reach out and invite them to join the voices already supporting the <strong>International Day Against Workplace Harassment and for Inclusion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The responses were disappointing. Most of them never replied\u2014a deafening silence that raises real questions about the sincerity of their commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>OPINION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sixty-one business leaders signed a high-profile op-ed on diversity this past January. But when it comes to turning words into action&#8230; it&#8217;s a different story, observes Jo\u00eblle Payom, founder and president of Rezalliance, a Geneva-based nonprofit that promotes better practices in the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>By Jo\u00eblle Payom, founder and president of Rezalliance<\/em> <em>Le Temps \u2013 April 29, 2025<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah, the passionate statements from CEOs\u2026 This time, 61 executives came together to reaffirm their unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. A powerful declaration of intent. But an intention is just that\u2014an intention. And between words and actions, there\u2019s often a gulf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I came across their op-ed published in the <em>Opinions<\/em> section of <em>Le Temps<\/em> on January 28, 2025, I thought to myself: <em>\u201cAt last! Leaders taking a stand and using their voices and influence for a meaningful cause!\u201d<\/em> Na\u00efvely perhaps, I took the time to write a personal email to each of them on February 14, 2025 (<a href=\"https:\/\/rezalliance.com\/2025\/04\/05\/demande-de-soutien-envoye-aux-61-ceos-co-signataires-tribune-dei-dans-le-temps\/\">check the message<\/a>), inviting them to match words with action by supporting the <a href=\"https:\/\/24may.org\/en\/geneva2025\/\">International Day Against Harassment and for Inclusion in the World of Work<\/a>, which will take place in Geneva on May 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This initiative, launched in 2022, is supported by a former President of the Swiss Confederation and two key figures from the French-speaking Swiss business world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From 61 to 3<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of the 61 CEOs I contacted, guess how many replied? Thirteen. And how many agreed to take action? Three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three out of 61. That\u2019s little. Too little. So little, in fact, that I decided to ask members of my network to guess how many replies I had received. Most responded with \u201czero\u201d or \u201cmaybe one or two.\u201d Proof, if it were needed, that these public stances often attract likes but inspire little real trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a deeper level, of these 61 CEOs, how many actually understand the origins of DEI\u2014diversity, equity, and inclusion? How many know that the concept, imported from the United States, was born from the civil rights movement, a struggle for equality and social justice? How many understand the meaning of \u201cintersectionality\u201d and the central role it plays in any serious DEI policy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because promoting inclusion is not just about good intentions\u2014it\u2019s about addressing the root causes of systemic exclusion. It requires understanding how discrimination interlocks and reinforces itself along lines of gender, ethnicity, social class, sexual orientation, religious belief, disability, or any other characteristic that makes someone who they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, how many of those signatories took the time to educate themselves before co-signing the op-ed? I suspect very few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Inclusion is about survival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, there are still leaders who go beyond generic statements and surface-level pledges. To the three CEOs who pleasantly surprised me by responding, thank you. By supporting this day of awareness and concrete action initiated by Rezalliance, they demonstrate integrity and remind us that alignment between values and action is both rare and precious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These leaders\u2014and others\u2014will join us for the 2025 edition of the International Day Against Workplace Harassment and for Inclusion, organized in partnership with the Geneva Federation of Enterprises (FER Gen\u00e8ve). The event is open to the public upon registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inclusion is not a \u201cnice-to-have\u201d or a branding exercise\u2014it\u2019s a matter of health, economics, and fundamental rights. It\u2019s not a \u201cgame\u201d or about \u201cego\u201d; it\u2019s a question of survival for the human beings affected by exclusion in the workplace and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the commitment of those three leaders shows anything, it\u2019s that progress is possible when there is real will. Just imagine the impact if the other 58 were to turn their words into action. That wouldn\u2019t be just another op-ed\u2014it would be a true transformation of the world of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Words only matter when they\u2019re followed by action. Let\u2019s act accordingly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Now that I\u2019ve written this, I find myself sitting with a bench of unanswered questions.<\/strong><br>When the applause fades and the statements are filed away, what remains of the promise to build inclusive workplaces? How many leaders are ready to face the uncomfortable truths that real inclusion demands? And I can\u2019t help but wonder: how can we collectively hold employers accountable and ensure their commitment to inclusion is measured not by what they say, but by what they do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Any thoughts?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/rezalliance.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rezalliance <\/a> is an independent nonprofit organization based in Geneva, dedicated to helping workplaces prevent harassment and foster diversity and inclusion.
